Guides / Straight Key vs Paddle for Morse

Straight key vs paddle

You do not need hardware to start. MorseTime's pad and keyboard teach rhythm first. Hardware comes when you want on-air sending or a better fist.

Straight key

One contact: you make every dit and dah by hand. Excellent for learning timing. Can fatigue the wrist at high speeds.

Paddle + keyer

Paddles with an electronic keyer generate dits and dahs automatically from side presses. Iambic keying squeezes both sides for alternating elements. Faster and smoother once configured.

Bug (semi-automatic)

Mechanical side-swiper style: dits automatic, dahs manual (classic Vibroplex tradition). Advanced taste — not a beginner requirement.
